Muskingum University is a private, Christian institution located in New Concord, Ohio. Affiliated “historically, programmatically, and organizationally” with the Presbyterian Church, USA, Muskingum University’s mission is to “educate the ‘whole person’ – intellectually, spiritually, socially and physically – …by meeting students where they are on the educational continuum, and by helping these students progress to their maximum potential.” Located just one hour east of Columbus, Ohio’s capital, the University’s campus sits on 245 rolling acres featuring more than twenty major buildings. Established in 1837, the university boasts a rich history dating back to the time when the state of Ohio was still in its infancy.
Academic Programs
Muskingum University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1919. Muskingum awards both bachelor-level and masters degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Science; Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Master of Arts in Education; Master of Arts in Teaching; Master of Information Strategy, Systems and Technology; and Education Specialist. With more than 60 majors (including a dozen-plus interdisciplinary programs), nearly 10 pre-professional programs (including pre-medicine and pre-law), and teacher licensure in over 20 areas, students have plenty of options from which to pick and choose.Classes are taught by faculty members only and an Adult Degree Completion program is also made available for non-traditional students. Muskingum University offers nearly 20 international exchange study programs in at least a dozen different countries. Through the school’s study abroad programs, Muskingum students are given the opportunity to spend up to two semesters at a foreign university in locations such as Argentina, Canada, China, France, Japan, Spain, and more.
Student Life
Muskingum University has a total enrollment figure of just over 2,000 – nearly 1,800 of which are undergraduate students. Though a relatively small institution, Muskingum boasts an international community that is unusually rich and diverse with nearly 100 students representing at least ten foreign nations. A truly residential community, more than 90% of Muskingam’s students live either on campus or in the nearby village of New Concord. The campus features half a dozen residence halls, townhouses, an apartment unit, sorority suites, fraternity houses, and nearly twenty special program houses and students can also enjoy Muskingam’s newly furnished lounges, computer labs, kitchen and laundry facilities.Muskingum University’s campus boasts more than 90 active clubs and organizations, including musical organizations, academic honoraries, and more than ten sororities and fraternities. The Center for Church Life provides programs for the area clergy, laity, and students. As an NCAA Division III school, Muskingum is a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference and boasts a number of intercollegiate sports as well as several intramural sports and activities.
