Morehouse College is a private, 4-year Historically Black College (HBCU) located in Atlanta, GA. The all-male school is a part of the Atlanta University Center which includes Clark Atlanta University, Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse School of Medicine and Spelman College. Founded as Augusta Institute in 1867 to educate African American men in theology and education, the school was first located in Augusta, GA and moved to Atlanta in 1879 where is became known as Atlanta Baptist Seminary. The school was renamed Morehouse College in 1913 in honor of Dr Henry L Morehouse who was corresponding Secretary of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. The compact, 60 acre urban campus features green space at the south end with tree-lined walkways and a park-like atmosphere. Among the notable alumni of Morehouse College are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., former presidential candidate Herman Cain, actor Samuel L. Jackson and Olympic gold medalist Edwin Moses.

Academic Programs

Morehouse College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees in over 25 majors. Noted for Music, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Social Sciences. The College is comprised of three Departments: Business Administration & Economics, Humanities & Social Sciences and Science & Mathematics. Per the Mission Statement, “The mission of Morehouse College is to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service. A private historically black liberal arts college for men, Morehouse realizes this mission by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students. In addition, the College assumes special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of black people… The College seeks students who are willing to carry the torch of excellence and who are willing to pay the price of gaining strength and confidence by confronting adversity, mastering their fears, and achieving success by earning it. In pursuit of its mission, Morehouse challenges itself to be among the very finest liberal arts institutions in the world.

Student Life

There are over 2,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Morehouse College, most of whom live on campus among the over 5 residence halls and within Learning Communities. There is also a significant Greek presence. The College sponsors over 80 clubs and organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the maroon and white Maroon Tigers field teams in 7 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition. The campus’ close proximity to other campuses within the Atlanta University Center allows for an expanded network available to students. Students are also expected to comply with the College’s Code of Conduct called ‘Five Wells’ – Morehouse Men are Renaissance Men with a social conscience and global perspective who are Well-Read, Well-Spoken, Well-Traveled, Well-Dressed and Well-Balanced. Also, the College clearly states is Values and Goals in the 5 Principles: Principle 1: Accentuate our Distinctiveness; Principle 2: Embrace An Innovation Imperative; Principle 3: Rise to Financial Strength; Principle 4: Attract the Best Talent Possible; and Principle 5: Develop Operational & Service Excellence.
