Montclair State University is a public, doctoral university located in Montclair, New Jersey on a 252 acre campus. In 1908 the institute was established as the New Jersey State Normal School and began by offering two year programs for the training and development of school teachers. In the mid 1920s the school became the Montclair State Teachers College, developing a four-year Bachelor of Arts program in pedagogy – the first United States institute to do so. In 1958 the college merged with the Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene and was renamed Montclair State College; in 1966 the college became a multi-purpose, comprehensive institution. From there the college only continued to grow, earning university status in 1994. Montclair State University has been named among the top tier of Northern Regional Universities and was named one of the “Top Public Schools” by US News & World Report.

Academic Programs

Montclair State University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1937. The University is “committed to serving the educational needs of New Jersey with programs characterized by academic rigor and currency in the development of knowledge and its applications.” Approximately 300 majors, minors, concentrations and certification programs are offered by Montclair State University.

Montclair State University is made up of a number of colleges and schools, including: the College of the Arts, which houses the John J. Cali School of Music and the School of Communication and Media; the College of Education and Human Services; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the College of Science and Mathematics; the Feliciano School of Business; the School of Nursing; and The Graduate School. More than 50 undergraduate majors and 60 concentrations are offered, with the most popular majors being in Business Administration (BS), Psychology (BA), Biology (BS), Family and Child Studies (BA), and Justice Studies (BA). More than 130 graduate degree programs are also offered as well as over 60 certificates, teacher certifications, administrative and educational services certifications.

Student Life

Montclair State University has a total enrollment figure of more than 20,000, including nearly 1,600 undergraduate students. Over 5,000 students choose to reside on campus in one of the University’s residence halls and the undergraduate student body’s male to female ratio is approximately 40% to 60%, respectively. Montclair State University’s campus is home to a wide variety of recognized student clubs and organizations which cater to a range of interests. These groups, as well as the Greek Life fraternities and sororities, provide ample opportunity for students to meet and forge lasting relationships with fellow students outside of the classroom setting.

Montclair State University’s Campus Recreation department offers a variety of fitness programs, intramural and club sports, outdoor adventures, and special events for students. The University’s varsity team competes nationally in the NCAA Division III and the school is a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Montclair State University’s varsity teams include basketball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, soccer, men’s football, women’s volleyball and women’s cross country.
