Millikin University is a co-educational, comprehensive, independent, privately supported four-year university located in Decatur, Illinois. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), Millikin University was established in 1901 by prominent Decatur businessman, James Millikin. Millikin’s purpose for the school was that it would be a place which embraced the “practical” side of learning as well as the “literary and classical” and though affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, would not be narrowly “sectarian” but would remain open to all. The largest city in the state of Illinois, Decatur is located in the central part of the state along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur. Notable alumni from Millikin College include a Disney artist, performers including Jodi Benson and Matthew West, NFL athletes and coaches, United States Representative Rodney L. Davis and former US Congressman, Thomas W. Ewing.

Academic Programs

Millikin University’s mission is to allow students to “learn through real-world projects that reinforce classroom experiences, help develop practical skills, and express the University’s responsibility to the community.” Millikin University’s statement continues, saying that its mission is that students “learn to see connections with other academic disciplines to demonstrate the diversity of human experience, the interactions between technology and society…And they learn about themselves and others, developing a respect for differences and for the dignity of all.”

Millikin University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1914. The University is made up of several colleges and schools, including the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts, Professional Studies, and Tabor School of Business. Undergraduate studies are offered in the areas of Arts & Sciences, Business, Fine Arts and Professional Studies with graduate studies available in Business Administration and Nursing. Internships play a vital role in the Millikin University educational experience. Students of all majors are given opportunities to intern locally in Decatur as well as nationally and even internationally.

Student Life

A residential institution, Millikin University offers students housing in one of its several residence halls or apartments and Greek housing is also available for members of fraternities or sororities. Situated on a 75 acre campus, Millikin University boasts a number of student clubs and organizations, including religious organizations, special interest groups, honors societies and more, providing opportunity for fellow students to connect with each other and with faculty members outside of the classroom.
