Millersville University of Pennsylvania is a public institution located in Millersville, Pennsylvania just outside of historic Lancaster City. Established in 1855 as the Lancaster County Normal School for the purpose of training and equipping teachers, just four years later in 1859 the school became the first Pennsylvania State Normal School and was renamed the Millersville State Normal School. Over the next several years as the school continued to expand and grow in its scope and academic offerings, its name changed as well and in 1983 the name Millersville University was officially adopted. Today, Millersville University is one of the most highly regarded public universities in its region and has been ranked among the top 25 public universities in the North.

Academic Programs

Millersville University offers more than 100 undergraduate programs of study in addition to a wide range of graduate level programs. The University takes a holistic view when it comes to admissions and places significant weight on a student’s achievement in a strong high school curriculum. Millersville University offers a test-optional admissions program for all qualified students who apply from a Lancaster County high school. The University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1950.

All of Millersville University’s classes are taught by professors – nearly all of whom have earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree – and never teaching assistants. The University is comprised of three colleges, namely the College of Education and Human Services; the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; and the College of Science and Technology. Undergraduate students are also encouraged to apply to the Honors College in order to take their education “one step farther” and become part of a program that “challenges them to raise their academic and professional sights beyond their expectations.”

Student Life

Millersville University has a total enrollment figure of approximately 8,000, including more than 7,000 undergraduate students. Several options for on-campus student housing are available including Millersville University’s East Village, Gilbert (which offers temporary housing), Reighard (reserved for Honor’s College students), Shenks (reserved for upperclass students), South Village, and West Village residence halls. Special Interest housing including graduate, gender inclusive, and international community is also available.

Millersville University boasts a beautiful 250-plus acre campus which offers an intimate and welcoming setting. The University’s pet swans – named Miller and S’Ville – can often be seen on campus. The iconic duo has been a part of the University’s tradition for more than 50 years, having been purchased in 1966 for only $100 and originally named Fred and Ethel. On-campus, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs and organizations, community service and athletics – Millersville University’s varsity teams compete at the NCAA Division II level. Students also have the opportunity to travel and enjoy the sights and sounds of New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., all of which are with easy distance of the University.
