Maryville College is a private, coeducational, four-year, liberal arts institution located in Maryville, Tennessee. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA, Maryville College is the 12th oldest college in the South, having been established in 1819 Isaac Anderson, a Presbyterian minister, as the Western Theological Seminary. Rev. Anderson’s purpose in founding the school was to help meet the need for more ministers within the local community of Knox County. Maryville College is guided by its founder’s motto: “Do good on the largest possible scale.” The college is known for the rigorous and highly personal educational experience it provides and has been ranked among the best institutions in the nation.

Academic Programs

Maryville College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1922. Personal instruction and student-professor contact have become hallmarks of a Maryville College education; the college’s mission is to prepare “students for lives of citizenship and leadership as we challenge each one to search for truth, grow in wisdom, work for justice and dedicate a life of creative and service to the peoples of the world.”

Maryville College joins the liberal arts with professional preparation, offering more than 60 undergraduate majors and seven pre-professional programs. Traditional liberal arts programs of study are at the core of Maryville College, including the fine arts, history, math, sciences, languages, literature. Degrees offered at Maryville College include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Science. Certification programs are also available in elementary and secondary education, nonprofit leadership and ministry and church leadership. In addition, Maryville College also offers duel-degree programs which are available in engineering, health care/nursing, biopharmaceutical sciences and veterinary science.

Student Life

Just over 1,000 students are currently enrolled at Maryville College, all of whom are undergraduates. Representatives from roughly 40 states and the District of Columbia make up the student body as do students hailing from more than 25 foreign nations. Maryville College’s 263 acre campus is located between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Knoxville, Tennessee, the third largest city in the state. Maryville College is easily accessible from either I-40 or I-75 and the campus is just five miles away from the McGhee Tyson Airport.

Maryville College’s campus is home to a wide variety of student-led clubs and organizations. The college boasts over a dozen varsity teams, including basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, football, baseball, softball, and volleyball, which compete at the NCAA Division III level. Maryville College also offers students with The Mountain Challenge program which provides opportunities for students to enjoy the outdoors and earn academic credit.
