Marietta College is a private, coeducational, residential, contemporary liberal arts institution located in Marietta, Ohio. Though formally chartered in 1835, Marietta College’s roots reach back to 1797 when the institution was founded as the Muskingum Academy, making Marietta College one of America’s 37 “Revolutionary Colleges” – institutions whose origins date back to the 18th century. Situated on a 90 acre campus, Marietta College’s grounds feature a state-of-the-art recreational center, planetarium and library and is located a mere two blocks away from downtown. Marietta, Ohio is a historic town, founded in 1788 by veterans of the Revolutionary War. The oldest organized city in the Northwest Territory, Marietta, Ohio is part of the much larger Mid-Ohio Valley metropolitan area and is located just a few hours away from the cities of Columbus, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Academic Programs

Marietta College’s mission is to provide “a strong foundation for a lifetime of leadership, critical thinking, and problem solving.” The College’s mission statement continues, “We achieve this mission by offering undergraduates a contemporary liberal arts education and graduate students an education grounded in advanced knowledge and professional practice. Intellectual and creative excellence defines the Marietta experience.” Marietta College is led by Seven Core Values which form the foundation for everything the institution does; these core values are “Liberal Arts Foundation; In-Depth Programs of Study; Global Perspective and Diversity; World of Work; Community; Leadership; and Service”

Marietta College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1913. The College offers more than 40 undergraduate majors in the areas of the Arts & Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social sciences. A wealth of opportunities for field experience, professional internships, and study abroad programs are available. Marietta College also offers master’s degree programs in the areas of Physician Assistant Studies and Psychology.

Student Life

Marietta College has a total enrollment figure of more than 1,300, the vast majority of whom are undergraduate students. Representatives from more than 30 states and over half a dozen countries make up the student body. As a private residential institution, Marietta College requires all students under the age of 23 to live on-campus for all eight semesters, unless certain exceptions are met. Both single sex and optional co-ed residence halls are available; no curfew is enforced, however in order to maintain security, all main entrance doors to residence halls are locked 24/7 with entry gained through computerized card access.

Marietta College recognizes more than 70 active student clubs and organizations on campus; these include academic/professional clubs, athletic/recreational clubs, governing bodies, service honoraries, media/publishing, religious offerings, Greek organizations, and a variety of special interest groups. The Pioneer Activities Council (PAC), the student-run programming board, sponsors variety of activities and events for students including everything from lectures to movies to sporting event trips to comedy showcases and more. Marietta’s intercollegiate teams compete at the NCAA Division III level.
