Lewis-Clark State College is a small, public liberal arts college in Lewiston, ID, a gold rush city that was almost the state’s capital. Lewis-Clark was founded in 1893 as a state normal school, educating teachers for the newly-admitted state. The normal school tradition – hands-on, real classroom training and vocational studies – remains deeply embedded in Lewis-Clark’s curriculum, which is particularly focused on professional programs, career training, and real-world applicability. Lewis-Clark has consistently been featured in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of the top regional colleges in the West for its quality and affordability, as the lowest tuition rate in the state of Idaho.

Academic Programs

Lewis-Clark has an unusual organization, combining the career and technical training programs of its junior college heritage (associate’s and bachelor’s of applied science degrees) with its traditional undergraduate academic programs (bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees). This arrangement allows Lewis-Clark to meet the specialized technical needs of trade and career students with programs such as CNC Machining Technology, HVAC, and Engineering Technology, with the expanded resources of a full college (including cutting-edge labs and highly prepared faculty). In all, Lewis-Clark offers more than 90 degree programs, including 9 fully online degrees.

Along with Lewis-Clark’s commitment to adult and technical education, the college is known for its excellent student support and mentorship, with low 15:1 student/faculty ratios for academic programs, and 2:1 ratios for technical programs. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Lewis-Clark one of the top regional colleges in the West regularly for years, and their excellent graduate placement rates are signs of Lewis-Clark’s quality – 94% job or graduate school placement for academic graduates, and 97% for technical and career programs.

Student Life

Lewis-Clark is a small college, with just over 3500 students, almost two-thirds of whom are women. Twenty-five states and 34 countries are represented in the student body, and the student body is highly diverse, especially in age, class, and educational background, thanks to Lewis-Clark’s career and technical programs. Lewis-Clark also makes outreach to Idaho’s Native American community a priority, with a special division for Native American/Minority Student Services.

More than 60 clubs and organizations on campus give students a way to unwind, build community, and find their tribe, whether in special interests like hip-hop dance, or political groups like the College Republicans and College Democrats. Numerous career organizations help students capitalize on their professional and trade education alike, such as the HVAC Club and the Teacher Corps and Alumni. Of course, in Idaho there’s always winter sports and outdoor adventure, with hiking, skiing, rafting, and other activities led by the Outdoor Adventures Program.
