La Salle University is a private, accredited, Catholic institution in the tradition of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, La Salle University was established in 1863 by Brother Teliow and Archbishop James Wood as an all-male college. It was not until 1970 that women were admitted into La Salle University’s regular classes, making it a fully co-educational university. An urban university, La Salle University encourages students to “enhance their academic experience by immersing themselves in the rich resources of Philadelphia and the region.” La Salle University also has a presence in both Bucks County and Montgomery County, PA as well as an international presence in Basel, Switzerland, and Prague, Czech Republic.

Academic Programs

La Salle University describes itself as a diverse community of learners and according to its mission statement, the university’s “rigorous curriculum and co-curricular experiences [are] designed to help student gain theoretical and practical knowledge, deepen their ethical sensibilities, and prepare for a lifetime of continuous learning, professional success, and dedicated service.” La Salle University offers a wide range of traditional, online, and hybrid courses and programs. The University is divided into three main schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, which offers more than 35 undergraduate programs; the School of Business, which offers nearly 10 undergraduate programs; and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences with 4 undergraduate programs.

La Salle University also offers a nearly two dozen Master’s programs, including Bilingual/Bicultural Studies; Business Administration; Central/Eastern European Studies; Computer Information Science (Online); Counseling and Family Therapy Programs; Economic Crime Forensics; Education; English; History; Human Capital Development (Online); Information Technology Leadership (Online); Instructional Technology Management (Online); Nonprofit Leadership (Online); Nursing; Professional and Business Communication; Public Health; Speech-Language Pathology; TESOL; Theology and Ministry; and Translation and Interpretation. A few Doctoral degrees are also currently offered, including Clinical Psychology, Psy.D.; Nursing Practice (DNP) Online; Theology (Th.D.).

Student Life

More than 6,000 students are enrolled at La Salle University, including over 4,000 undergraduate students. La Salle University’s Philadelphia campus boasts 130 acres, located in part on Belfield, the estate of Revolutionary War patriot and painter, Charles Wilson Peale, who is most famous for his portrait of George Washington and other founding fathers. La Salle University’s campus is divided into three main parts – North, South, and West campuses. Both the North and South portions of the campus are located in the Logan-Belfield area of Philadelphia while the western part of the campus is located in the Germantown, Philadelphia neighborhood.

A wide variety of special interest student organizations exist on La Salle University’s campus, as well as a strong Greek life presence with more than dozen fraternities and sororities. La Salle University also boasts one of the most successful club sport programs in the region, based largely in part on the commitment that student leaders and coaches bring to the table. Nearly two dozen varsity sports teams, known as the Explorers, are also sponsored by La Salle University; these compete at the NCAA Division I level.
