Located just 10 miles from Cleveland, John Carroll University sits on 63 acres of University Heights, OH. Close to Lake Erie, students at the Jesuit Catholic 4-year private school enjoy lakefront living and all that goes with it. The school was founded in 1886 as St. Ignatius College; it was renamed in 1923 in honor of the first Archbishop of the Catholic Church in the U.S. The compact campus features traditional gothic architecture and the campus enjoys open green spaces, too. Its proximity to Cleveland offers many opportunities for leisure and ministry in one of the Midwest’s largest cities. Notable alumni of John Carroll University include sports legend Don Shula and media icon Tim Russert.

Academic Programs

John Carroll University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, Master’s Degrees and post-masters certificates in 38 majors. Presently, there are no online degree programs. Noted for its Teacher Education program, the largest program is in Business. According to the Mission Statement, John Carroll University is “committed to the transmission and enrichment of the treasury of human knowledge with the autonomy and freedom appropriate to a university. [The students] should be well grounded in liberalizing, humanizing arts and sciences; proficient in the skills that lead to clear, persuasive expression; trained in the intellectual discipline necessary to pursue a subject in depth; aware of the interrelationship of all knowledge and the need for integration and synthesis; able to make a commitment to a tested scale of values and to demonstrate the self-discipline necessary to live by those values; alert to learning as a life-long process; open to change as they mature; respectful of their own culture and that of others; aware of the interdependence of all humanity; and sensitive to the need for social justice in response to current social pressures and problems.”

Student Life

John Carroll University has over 3000 students, most of whom live on campus among the 8 residence halls and apartments. There are over 100 student organizations with a wide range of focus from service opportunities to club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the blue and gold ‘Blue Streaks’ field teams in 12 sports – cheered on by the mascot, Lobo the Wolf – and participate in NCAA Division III competition. The school’s stated Vision is kept in focus: “John Carroll University will graduate individuals of intellect and character who lead and serve by engaging the world around them and around the globe.” To this end, the school’s Core Values permeate all aspects of campus life: “a commitment to learning in order to create: An environment of inquiry; a rigorous approach to scholarship, and commitment to embrace and to live humane values; [commitment] to the intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical development of each student; An inclusive community; a culture of service and excellence; a commitment to sharing our gifts in service to each other and the community; a campus that responds to demographic, economic, and social challenges [and] an appreciation that our personal and collective choices can build a more just world.”
