Huntington University was founded in 1897, when the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, wishing to open a Christian college, was approached by a committee from Huntington, IN, wishing to attract a college to the town. Then called Central College, Huntington established a commitment to the community of Huntington and to Christian education that continues until today. Huntington is known for its community engagement and dedication to service, and is part of the Council for Christian Colleges and University. Huntington has been ranked one of the top regional colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report and the Princeton Review.

Academic Programs

Primarily an undergraduate educator in the liberal arts college tradition, Huntington has grown into a more comprehensive university in the 21st century, offering more than 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Pre-professional programs in Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Athletic Training are also available, and have developed a strong reputation, with solid acceptance rates into graduate professional schools. With its Brethren Church heritage, Huntington is especially strong in the helping professions, including nursing, psychology, and social work, but the university is also known for its film and animation, exercise science, and fine arts programs. Huntington maintains a low, 13:1 student:faculty ratio to increase mentorship and spiritual guidance for students.

As an evangelical Christian institution, faith is deeply embedded in Huntington’s curriculum; all students are required to take part in Chapel services, and while students of all faith backgrounds are admitted, all students are expected to adhere to Huntington’s moral policies. Huntington combines the critical thought and research inherent in the traditional liberal arts with Christian faith and conservative theology, preparing students for careers while also developing their spiritual depths. Huntington’s graduates incorporate their faith into the professional and personal lives. Community service and service learning are also critical to Huntington’s curriculum; students take part in more than 11,000 hours of service per year.

Student Life

With a student body of just over 1000, most of whom live on campus, Huntington is committed to building a Godly community on campus and in the town of Huntington. The Friesen Center for Volunteer Services helps students find community service opportunities, while numerous student groups also coordinate their own outreach. As Huntington is a suburb of Fort Wayne, Indiana’s second-largest city, students have ample opportunities for internship and employment, reflected in Huntington’s excellent 97% placement rate for graduates.

Huntington offers more than 30 student-led clubs and organizations, as well as numerous departmental and discipline-specific groups, with everything from honor societies to recreation groups. Intramural sports are popular at Huntington, from ping-pong and billiards to flag football and dodgeball. The Huntington Foresters compete in the NAIA Crossroads League, with 17 men’s and women’s varsity sports. Other recreational groups include the Recreation Club and the Ultimate Frisbee club, and Huntington’s 160-acre, forested campus gives students a way to find nature and outdoor activities right outside their dorm rooms.
