A small, Christian liberal arts college in Brownwood, TX, Howard Payne University is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. HPU was founded in 1889, when the Pecan Valley Baptist Association decided to provide an institution for Christian higher education in the area, and the college was named for the first major donor. Acquisition by the Baptist General Convention helped Howard Payne weather financial difficulties in the 1890s, and merger with a nearby Presbyterian institution in 1953 helped Howard Payne College reach university status. Today, HPU is known for its religious, liberal arts, and music programs.

Academic Programs

As a small liberal arts college, how Howard Payne does education is the key. In the classical liberal arts model, HPU gives students a 10:1 student/faculty ratio, promising students the opportunity to build productive mentoring relationships with faculty throughout their college career. Small class sizes develop camaraderie and connections for future growth and collaboration, while a curriculum centered on Christian ethics and faith fosters servant leadership in all disciplines. As a bible-based institution, Howard Payne puts equal emphasis on academic rigor and student support, placing knowledge and wisdom at the center of education.

Howard Payne offers more than 100 programs, including bachelor’s degrees, minors, and professional programs. With HPU’s Christian background and emphasis on leadership, it’s no surprise that their School of Christian Studies and School of Music are two of the most respected and most popular in their field, as they focus on worship and religious life. The Newman Honors Academy is one of HPU’s points of pride, preparing academically gifted students for Christian service with an emphasis on Civic Leadership and Public Policy.

Student Life

Student life at Howard Payne University is built around intellectual, personal, and spiritual growth, through relationships within the campus community and particularly through service on and off campus. Numerous official activities give Howard Payne students opportunity to learn and grow in entertaining ways, while honor societies, fraternities and sororities, and student-led special-interest clubs build communities within the community.

Service is also central to student life, as servant leadership is central to Howard Payne’s mission. Baptist Student Ministries is a hub for religious activity and outreach, from prayer and bible study to community service and evangelism. From nursing and retirement home outreach for seniors to tutorial services for elementary school students, Howard Payne students get out into the world beyond campus and into the community around Brown County to spread Christian love and share their growing knowledge with others.
