Hope College is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts institution located in Holland, Michigan. Established in 1862 and beginning with just 10 students, Hope College was not officially chartered until 1866. Founded by Reverend A.C. Van Raalte with the support of the Reformed Church in America, Rev. Van Raalte’s mission was to create “an educational experience for Holland children that was rooted in Christian character.” Today, Hope College maintains its historic affiliation with the Reformed Church in America, though students of any or no religious preference are welcomed. A nationally recognized institution, Hope College has been named among America’s Top Colleges by Forbes, as well received recognitions from The Princeton Review, Fiske Guide to Colleges, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Academic Programs

Hope College’s mission is to “educate students for lives of leadership and service in a global society through academic and co-curricular programs of recognized excellence in the liberal arts and in the context of the historic Christian faith.” The College holds its accreditation through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Hope College offers a wide range of undergraduate programs with more than 90 majors, minors and pre-professional programs, divided into the areas of Arts & Humanities, Natural & Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Pre-Health Programs. Hope College strongly encourages students to participate in some type of experiential learning and more than half of students participate in at least one internship experience with nearly a quarter of students participating in two or more. More than half of students also participate in either a domestic off-campus study experience or in study abroad programs which are offered in more than 60 different locations.

Student Life

Hope College has a total enrollment figure of well over 3,000, all of whom are undergraduate students. Representatives from more than 35 states and territories as well as over 30 foreign nations make up the Hope College’s student body. Hope College views the campus living experience as an integral part of a student’s time at Hope. All unmarried, degree-seeking students are required to live on-campus in college-owned housing unless annual permission to live off-campus or to commute from a parent’s home is granted. Student housing is offered through the College’s several Residence Halls, Apartments, or Cottages.

Hope College’s Student Activities Committee is responsible for hosting the school’s programming and student entertainment, which includes concerts; “Coffeehouse”, a weekly event which showcases student musicians and performers; trips; films, improve and comedy shows and other performances; traditional collegiate events including Hope College’s Homecoming Hoedown, Spring Fling and Winter Fantasia; outdoor events, and more. An NCAA Division III school, college sports also play a significant role in the student life experience. Fielding nearly two dozen men’s and women’s varsity teams, Hope College’s athletes compete in the MIAA conference.
