Hampton University is a private institution of higher education located in Hampton, Virginia. Nestled along the banks of the Virginia Peninsula, near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, Hampton University is situated on a 314 acre campus. One of the top historically black universities in the world, Hampton University was established in 1868 following the American Civil War for the purpose of educating freedmen. Ten years after its founding, Hampton established in a program for instructing Native Americans which lasted until 1923. Hampton University is committed to multiculturalism and since its beginning has served students from diverse national, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Both research and public service are integral to the University’s mission and the faculty, staff and students at Hampton work to provide leadership and service to the university as well as the global community.
Academic Programs
Accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1932, Hampton University offers a broad range of technical, liberal arts, and graduate degree programs ranging from the bachelor level to doctoral. The university is made up of seven schools of study, including Business, Education and Human Development, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, Pharmacy, Science, the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications, and the University College. Numerous graduate programs are also offered through Hampton University’s Graduate College and non-academic degree programs are offered through the school’s campus extension, the College of Virginia Beach, as well as the University College.Hampton University also offers a variety of online study option. Online students are able to earn certificates, undergraduate or graduate degrees in an ever-expanding range of degree program offerings. Online students also have opportunity to take advantage of Hampton’s comprehensive student support services that provide real help from real people.
Student Life
Hampton University has a total enrollment figure of over 4,000 students, most of whom are undergraduate students. A predominantly black institution, Hampton’s students hail from nearly all fifty states and more than 30 territories and foreign nations. A tight-knit community of learners and educators, Hampton’s campus boasts more than 100 student-led clubs and organizations, giving students ample opportunity to connect, learn new things, and create lasting memories and friendships. An NCAA Division I-AA School, Hampton is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and hosts a number of men’s and women’s varsity teams which are nicknamed the Pirates.A university rich in history, Hampton is also steeped in tradition and possesses quite a few unique myths, ghost stories and quirks that have endured the test of time. Though where and when it originated, no one is exactly certain, one of the most enduring myths is that if a student steps inside the Ogden Circle before their appointed graduation day, they will not graduate on time. Each year after Hampton’s induction ceremony, freshmen students gather around the circle with their candles, taking great care not to cross the fateful line.
