Guilford College is a private, undergraduate, liberal arts institution located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Established in 1837 by members of the Religious Society of Friends, Guilford College was founded as New Barden Boarding School, originally. It was not until 1888 that the school became a four-year liberal arts college. Guilford College continues to be guided by its strong Quaker heritage, the College is well known for its unique program offerings which include subjects such as Peace and Conflict Studies and Community and Justice Studies. Guilford College posses a number of strong core values which include: Community, Diversity, Equality, Excellence, Integrity, Justice, and Stewardship.

Academic Programs

Guilford College mission is to “provide a transformative, practical and excellent liberal arts education that produces critical thinkers in a inclusive, diverse environment, guided by Quaker testimonies of community, equality, integrity, peace and simplicity and emphasizing the creative problem-solving skills, experience, enthusiasm and international perspectives necessary to promote positive change in the world.” Guilford College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1926.

Guilford College is divided into five academic divisions including Arts; Business, Policy and Sport Studies; Humanities; Natural Sciences and Mathematics; and Social Sciences plus an Interdisciplinary Studies program. Undergraduate majors at Guilford College include Accounting, English, Mathematics, African and African American Studies, Environmental Studies, Music, Art, Exercise & Sport Sciences, Peace & Conflict Studies, Biology Forensic Accounting, Philosophy, Business Administration, Forensic Biology, Physics , Chemistry, French, Political Science, Community & Justice Studies, Geology, Psychology, Computing Technology & Information Systems, German, Religious Studies, Creative Writing, Health Sciences, Sociology & Anthropology, Criminal Justice, History, Spanish, Cyber and Network Security, Integrative Studies, Sport Management, Economics, International Studies, Theatre Studies, Education Studies, and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies.

Student Life

Guilford College has a total enrollment figure of nearly 2,000, all of whom are undergraduate students. A residential campus, all students under the age of 23 years are required to live on campus in College-owned housing and have a meal plan with College dining services. Housing options are available for single students only and include several residence halls, apartment complexes which are reserved for upperclass students and Theme Houses. Guilford College’s Themed Housing allows a group of students who share a similar interest to live together in special interest housing or theme houses. Summer Housing is also available for traditional students who are enrolled in Guilford College’s Summer Courses.

Situated on a beautiful 220 acre forested campus, Guilford College recognizes at least 40 student organizations and clubs which cater to a wide range of interests. Events and activities at the College also include a variety of concerts, art exhibitions, globally-known guest lecturers, multicultural programs, varsity sporting events, festivals and dances. As an NCAA Division III school, Guilford College’s varsity athletic teams compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
