Gannon University, a private 4-year Catholic university, is located in Erie, PA. Gannon was founded in 1933 as the two-year Cathedral College by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie. In 1944, the school became the four-year men’s school Gannon College of Arts and Sciences, named in honor of the then-Bishop of Erie, John Mark Gannon. The school went co-educational in 1964 and achieved university status in 1979. The campus is located in downtown Erie, blocks away from the Presque Isle Bay (a portion of Lake Erie). Erie is Pennsylvania’s access point to the Great Lakes and had been an industrial center in years past. Now the city is host to smaller, more agile steel and plastics manufacturing companies. Among the notable alumni are many local and state political figures.

Academic Programs

Gannon University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 50 majors. Presently, there are 6 undergraduate degrees and 2 nursing degrees available online. The university is comprised of three colleges: College of Engineering and Business, including the Dahlkemper School of Business and Engineering & Computer Science; the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, including the School of Humanities & Social Sciences and the School of Education; and the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences, including the Villa Maria School of Nursing. Gannon is noted for its healthcare fields; the largest programs on campus are in healthcare and business. Per the Mission statement, “Gannon is a Catholic, Diocesan university dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. Our faculty and staff prepare students to be global citizens through programs grounded in the liberal arts and sciences and professional specializations. Inspired by the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, we offer a comprehensive, values-centered learning experience that emphasizes faith, leadership, inclusiveness and social responsibility.”

Gannon sponsors over 80 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the maroon and gold Golden Knights, led by Victor E. Knight, field teams in 13 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition. The school’s Core Values are articulated as follows: “When students come to Gannon, they become part of a community that is guided by 2000 years of Christian wisdom and tradition. While students come from diverse religious backgrounds, and explore the world of contemporary ideas, the University is grounded in the Catholic vision of life – its meaning, its purpose, its value. Students are surrounded by a strong faith community. Theological courses invite students to integrate theological values into professional and personal decisions. Through Gannon’s LIFECORE program, students experience and are encouraged to model a healthy spiritual lifestyle. The University has a vibrant Campus Ministry office which provides opportunities for faith development. The Gannon campus is nestled in a neighborhood of churches and temples.
