Between Memphis and Nashville Tennessee lies an expanse of open spaces containing small towns. One of these, Henderson, TN is home to Freed-Hardeman University, a private 4-year institution. Founded in 1869 by members of the Church of Christ as the Henderson Male Institute. It has been named the Henderson Masonic Male and Female Institute, West Tennessee Christian College and Georgie Robertson Christian College; in 1990 it was given its current name. The 96 acre campus features modern architecture and fits well with its surroundings. The school is close to Pinson Mounds State Park, a 1200 acre preserve that contains over 15 Native American Mounds. The campus was also used as the setting for the 1973 film “Walking Tall.”

Academic Programs

Freed-Hardeman University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 35 areas of study. Noted for Nursing and Teacher Education, the largest undergraduate program is in Business. The University is comprised of five schools – College of Arts and Sciences, College of Biblical Studies, College of Business, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and Honors. There are also four Graduate Schools: Graduate School of Theology, Graduate Studies in Business, Graduate Studies in Behavioral Sciences and Graduate Studies in Education. Per the Mission Statement, “The mission of Freed-Hardeman University is to help students develop their God-given talents for His glory by empowering them with an education that integrates Christian faith, scholarship, and service.” Presently, there are only certain Graduate degrees available online, although the University sponsors a robust Study Abroad program.

Student Life

Over 1,300 undergraduate students are enrolled in Freed-Hardeman University, nearly all of whom live on campus in one of the 11 residence halls. The University sponsors over 35 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the burgundy and gold Lions field teams in 7 sports and participate in NAIA Division I competition. Students learn the school’s Vision, “Building on our heritage, Freed-Hardeman University will be the preferred academic community for students who seek to grow in faith, knowledge, and service in a changing world.” Students are also understand the school’s stated Goals – provide higher education with a Christian perspective by recognizing the Bible as the inspired and authoritative Word of God and by viewing each person as a special creation of God with ultimate accountability to God; provide educational opportunities by teaching students to be critical thinkers who communicate effectively and by offering a balanced education in the liberal arts and sciences and offering engaging academic opportunities to strengthen students; provide service to the individual, home, church, community, and world by facilitating spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical growth and by teaching students to become effective citizens of the local and world communities.
