The Florida Institute of Technology is a private doctoral and research university located in Melbourne, Florida. Established in 1958, the Florida Institute of Technology’s original mission was to offer advanced education to professionals who were working in the space program at what is now known as the Kennedy Space Center. The only independent technological university in the southeastern part of the country, the Florida Institute of Technology has been named a Tier 1 Best National University by the U.S. News and World Report and was ranked among the top 200 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Academic Programs

The mission of the Florida Institute of Technology is to “provide high-quality education to a culturally diverse student body in order to prepare students for entering the global workforce, seeking higher-education opportunities, and serving within their communities.” Florida Institute of Technology’s mission statement continues, “The University also seeks to expand knowledge through basic and applied research and to serve the diverse economic, cultural, and societal needs of our local, state, national and international constituencies.”

Florida Institute of Technology is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1964. The University is made up of several colleges, including the College of Aeronautics, the Nathen M. Bisk College of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Psychology & Liberal Arts, and the College of Science, as well as the Department of Extended Studies, and Florida Tech Online. Undergraduate and graduate programs are offered in a range of fields, with doctoral programs in science, engineering, mathematics, psychology, behavior analysis, and science and mathematics education. Florida Institute of Technology’s several facilities include the Foosaner Art Museum, the Gleason Performing Arts Center, the Florida Tech Research Park, and many others.

Student Life

Florida Institute of Technology has a total enrollment figure of over 6,500, including more than 3,500 undergraduate students. Approximately 2,000 undergraduates choose to reside in campus housing and all of Florida Institute of Technology’s housing complexes offer students home-like amenities including a full kitchen, living room and compartmentalized bathrooms. Florida Institute of Technology is situated on 130 subtropical acres, including the picturesque Botanical Garden. The University’s campus is located near to the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean and is less than one hour away from the Kennedy Space Center.

Campus life at Florida Institute of Technology revolves around the Denius Student Center, Panther Plaza, and the Clemente Center for Sports and Recreation; Panther Dining Hall too serves as a major gathering place for students and faculty alike. Florida Institute of Technology boasts a wide range of intramural sports programs for students to become involved with as well as more than 100 student organizations ranging from Greek life to College Players theatrical organization. As an NCAA Division II school, Florida Institute of Technology sponsors nearly two dozen intercollegiate sports teams, the majority of which compete in the Sunshine State Conference.
