Fairfield University is a private, 4-year school located in southwest Connecticut Fairfield. The spacious and green 200 acre campus is set in the midst of a large suburban environment nestled between NYC and Bridgeport, CT. Founded in 1942 by the Society of Jesus, Fairfield University is a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition of liberal arts studies. The campus buildings include three Manor homes from the original estates that went into the campus; the majority of the buildings are a blend of collegiate Gothic and Modern architecture. The town of Fairfield is noted for its colonial history and being the location of headquarters for such companies as Bigelow Tea, Sturm, Ruger & Co and The Voice ad agency. Notable is the coastal environment, as Fairfield is located along Long Island Sound.

Academic Programs

Fairfield University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 40 majors. Presently, there are limited online offerings but the school sponsors a robust study abroad programs including Fulbright Scholarss and study at the Beijing Center for Chinese Studies. The University is comprised of five colleges and schools: the Fairfield University College of Arts and Sciences, the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, the School of Engineering, the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, and the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions. Noted for Nursing and Teacher Education, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Healthcare fields. Per the Mission Statement, the university’s “primary objectives are to develop the creative intellectual potential of its students and to foster in them ethical and religious values and a sense of social responsibility… in its undergraduate schools it provides all students with a broadly based general education curriculum with a special emphasis on the traditional humanities as a complement to the more specialized preparation in disciplines and professions provided by the major programs.”

Student Life

There are nearly 4000 undergraduate students enrolled in Fairfield University, many of whom live on campus among the “Living and Learning Communities” as well as traditional residence halls, townhouses and apartments. The university sponsors over 80 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the cardinal and white Stags, led by Lucas the Stag, field teams in 12 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AAA competition. Students learn the Vision and Values of Fairfield University: the importance of “integration” as a way of approaching education; producing graduates whose lives reflect personal integration, competence in multicultural understanding, and a commitment to professional responsibility. Additionally, the school is committed to broad intellectual inquiry, so a comprehensive core curriculum is provided; focused on the whole self – body, mind, and spirit – so distinctive living and learning experiences are offered; committed to lifelong learning – so Jesuit values are integrated into curriculum; in pursuit of social justice and global citizenship – so a range of opportunities for service and civic engagement are offered; at Fairfield, “we ask the hard questions, listen closely, and care enough about the world to study it, work in it, make it better.”
