Emory & Henry College is a private, coeducational, liberal arts institution located in Emory, Virginia. Established in 1836, Emory & Henry College holds the distinction of being the oldest higher learning institution in Southwest Virginia. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the College is named for Bishop John Emory, a prominent Methodist church leader, and for American patriot and first governor of Virginia, Patrick Henry. Emory & Henry College is situated on a beautiful 168 campus which is surrounded by an additional 167 acres of undeveloped land and the village of Emory. The College’s campus has been noted for its picturesque landscape as well as the beauty of its architectural designs; several of the College’s buildings date back to the mid 19th century and many of the major academic buildings are listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings.
Academic Programs
Emory & Henry College’s mission is to “Increase in Excellence,” as its historic motto declares. The College strives to “challenge all persons to confront historical and contemporary ideas and issues and to develop the ability to think critically about all areas of human experience.” Emory & Henry College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1925.Emory & Henry College offers more than 60 programs of study including several interdisciplinary programs including Environmental Studies and Philosophy, Political Science and Economics. The College consists of the School of Health Sciences and several academic divisions including Education, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Visual & Performing Arts. Pre-professional programs are offered in the areas of engineering, health, law, and veterinary and the College also offers several graduate programs including American History (M.A.Ed.), an Occupational Therapy Degree, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Physician Assistant, Professional Studies (M.Ed.), Reading Specialist (M.A.Ed.), and a 5-year B.A./M.A. in Community & Organizational Leadership.
Student Life
Emory & Henry College has a total enrollment figure of more than 1,000, the vast majority of whom are undergraduate students. Nearly 80% of undergraduates choose to live on campus; on-campus student housing is offered in the form of nearly two dozen residence halls which provide both co-ed and single-gender accommodations. Campus housing is also made available to graduate students; however, most graduate students choose to reside off campus.Emory & Henry College is home to at least 70 active clubs and organizations on campus; these cater to a wide range of interests and offer opportunity for students to interact with one another outside of the classroom and develop valuable leadership qualities and skills. Emory & Henry College also features an Outdoor Adventure Program which is available to the entire College community – staff, faculty, and students alike. The goal of the program is to “responsibly introduce students, faculty, and staff to the wonders of silent sports: hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, cross-country skiing and biking.” As an NCAA Division III school, Emory & Henry College is a member of the Old Dominion Conference.
