Emerson College, a private 4-year institution located in Boston, MA was founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson as the Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art. The college was moved from the Back Bay area to the historic Washington Street Theatre District adjacent to Boston Common. The school’s campus features 5 performing arts venues including the Paramount Center, Cutler Majestic Theatre, Bill Bordy Auditorium, Semel Theater and Greene Theater. The urban setting right in the Theatre District allows for close contact with the performing arts – which is what Emerson is noted for. Among many notable alumni are journalist Morton Dean, producer Vin Di Bona and actor Denis Leary, announcer Don Pardo.

Academic Programs

Emerson College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees and Master’s Degrees in over 25 fields. The College is comprised of eight departments: Communication Sciences & Disorders, Communication Studies, Journalism, Marketing Communication, Performing Arts, Visual & Media Arts, Writing, Literature & Publishing and Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies. While noted for Speech Pathology, the largest programs on campus are in Communications and Performing Arts. Per the Mission Statement, “Emerson College offers educational programs that prepare undergraduate and graduate men and women to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in communication and the arts and to pursue scholarship and work that brings innovation to these disciplines. Established in 1880 as a small, regional school of oratory, Emerson has evolved into a diverse, coeducational, and multifaceted degree-granting institution with a liberal arts rather than conservatory orientation. But its mission and focus remains largely the same as it was in 1880: to explore and push the boundaries of communication, art, and culture and, thereby, to contribute to the advancement of society.”
