Elizabethtown College is a private, 4-year institution located in Elizabethtown, PA just 20 miles northwest of historic Lancaster, PA. The college was founded in 1899 by members of the Church of the Brethren for the purpose “to give such harmonious development to the physical, mental, and moral powers of both sexes as will best fit them for the duties of life and promote their spiritual interests.” The 200 acre campus features traditional red brick collegiate architecture and many open green spaces and tree-lined walkways. Lancaster County, PA, noted for its rich history, dairy farms and Pennsylvania Dutch population, provides a peaceful, picturesque backdrop for study at this liberal arts college.

Academic Programs

Elizabethtown College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees and Master’s Degrees in over 50 majors. Noted for Occupational Therapy and Music programs, the largest program on campus is in Business. The school is comprised of 19 departments with a core curriculum concentrated on the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Per the Mission Statement, “Molded by a commitment to educate for service, Elizabethtown College is a community of learners dedicated to educating students intellectually, socially, aesthetically and ethically for lives of service and leadership as citizens of the world. As a comprehensive institution, the College offers academic programs in the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies. Combining classroom instruction with experiential learning, these programs advance independent thought, personal integrity and social responsibility as the foundations for a life of learning. Founded by members of the Church of the Brethren, the College believes that learning is most noble when used to benefit others and affirms the values of peace, non-violence, human dignity and social justice.”

Student Life

There are over 1700 undergraduate students enrolled in Elizabethtown College, most of whom live on campus among the 8 residence halls as well as specific living communities. The College sponsors over 80 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the royal blue and gray Blue Jays field teams in 12 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Each April, the arrival of the warmer weather is celebrated with the “Thank Goodness It’s Spring” Weekend. Activities and events include outdoor games, activities and musical performances. Students at Elizabethtown are challenged to: Assume responsibility for their intellectual development, personal growth and well-being; Reason, analyze and engage in critical thinking; Demonstrate thoughtful and articulate communication; Understand the creative process and its role in human expression, and cultivate the ability to make informed aesthetic judgments; Navigate diverse cultural worldviews and perspectives; Make reflective ethical decisions and act with integrity to seek just outcomes with relationships, communities and society; Apply and integrate different strands of learning and comprehend interconnections in the process of gaining knowledge and experience; and Identify and cultivate a sense of purpose that inspires a commitment to meaningful work in service to society.
