Eckerd College is a private, 4-year school located in St. Petersburg, FL, on the Gulf Coast near Tampa and Clearwater. The school was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College and maintains a covenant relationship with the Presbyterian Church (USA). The 188 acre campus is set along Tampa Bay and takes advantage of its picturesque location with open spaces and glass-heavy buildings. The campus beach is a popular spot among students where the Gulf breezes and clear water can be enjoyed. Due to its close proximity to several Spring Training facilities, many alumni are associated with professional baseball – including Steve Balboni, Bill Evers and Joe Lefebvre.

Academic Programs

Eckerd College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees in over 35 programs. The largest programs on campus are in Business and Biology/Biomedical Sciences. Contemporary culture is explored academically as well, with a robust Speaker Series that invites a wide variety of lecturers covering relevant topics to the day as well as traditional subjects. Also, the school provides every student with the opportunity to do 40 hours of service before graduation. These experiences are built into the Reflective Service-Learning program. “Unlike volunteering or community service, these classes emphasize the connection between meaningful service and learning. Participants combine service with written reflection. The idea is not to just do something good but to think about the social, political, and economic issues at play in your service project.” Per the Mission Statement, “The mission of Eckerd College is to provide excellent, innovative undergraduate liberal arts education and lifelong learning programs in the unique Florida environment, within the context of a covenant relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).”

Student Life

There are over 2,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Eckerd College, most of whom live on campus among the varied residence halls and living communities, including designated “pet dorms” where students can have small companion animals. The College sponsors over 110 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the teal, navy and black Tritons field teams in 8 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition. The College seeks to “inspire and empower individuals to improve the world through mastery of self and a lifetime of learning… Eckerd is an innovative liberal arts and sciences community where students are well-taught and well-loved.” Students understand the history and tradition of the College: ‘Founded as Florida Presbyterian College, we opened our doors on Sept. 2, 1960 with 155 freshmen and 22 faculty. We have grown steadily over the years, and became Eckerd College in 1971. But one thing hasn’t changed: a focus on creative, innovative curriculum in the liberal arts tradition with a strong emphasis on small classes and world-class faculty who know and care about the success of every student.’
