Earlham College is a private, 4-year college located in Richmond, IN about halfway between Indianapolis and Dayton, OH. The 800 acre campus features traditional red brick architecture and is centered on a large main quad called “the Heart.” Founded in 1847 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the school grew from a boarding school for boys and is the third Quaker college in the US and the second to be co-educational. Among the high points in its history, in 1942 Earlham enrolled several dozen Japanese-American students to prevent their internment during World War II, a decision that was very controversial at the time; also, in 1970, it was the first to incorporate wilderness programs for credit as part of the curriculum. Among many notable alumni is Associated Press president William Penn Nixon.

Academic Programs

Earlham College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s Degrees and Master’s Degrees in over 50 programs. The school is comprised of the following Divisions: Visual & Performing Arts, Humanities Division, Natural Sciences Division, Social Sciences Division, and Interdisciplinary Programs. The largest program on campus is in the Biology/Biomedical field. Also, approximately 70% of students participate in the robust study abroad program. Per the Mission Statement, “Earlham College seeks to provide the highest quality undergraduate education in the liberal arts, including the sciences, shaped by the distinctive perspectives of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)… Earlham emphasizes: pursuit of truth, wherever that pursuit leads; lack of coercion, letting the evidence lead that search; respect for the consciences of others; openness to new truth and therefore the willingness to search; veracity, rigorous integrity in dealing with the facts; application of what is known to improving our world… Therefore Earlham stresses global education, peaceful resolution of conflict, equality of persons, and high moral standards of personal conduct.

Student Life

There are nearly 1,000 undergraduate students enrolled in Earlham College, most residing on campus in one of eight dormitories or among the over 25 themes housing options. There are dozens of clubs and student organizations on campus, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the maroon and white Hustlin’ Quakers, led by Big Earl, field teams in 8 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Earlham is not known as a “suitcase school;” the social calendar is filled with many weekend events and activities which tend to keep students on campus full time. As cultural changes are realized in America, Earlham has never strayed far from its Quaker values such as integrity, a commitment to peace and social justice, mutual respect and community decision-making. These ideas are also articulated in the Core Values of the college: Respect for Persons; Integrity; Peace and Justice; Simplicity; and Community. No matter what cultural changes occur in the society, these values are always proper.
