Connecticut College is a private, 4-year college located in New London, CT. About halfway between New Haven and Providence, RI, the campus is set along the Thames River where it empties into Long Island Sound. Founded in 1911 in response to Wesleyan University’s decision to stop admitting women, the “Connecticut College for Women” later shortened its name in 1969 when it went started admitting male students. The picturesque campus features a blend of collegiate gothic architecture and modern architecture and features an extensive 750 acre Arboretum adjacent to the main campus. Additionally, there is “Tempel Green” which is a large open area where Commencement is held. Among the notable alumni of Connecticut College are actress Estelle Parsons and AOL CEO Tim Armstrong.

Academic Programs

Connecticut College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees and Master’s Degrees in over 40 fields of study. The largest program on campus is in Social Sciences. The school is comprised of over 30 academic departments and interdisciplinary programs. Per the Mission Statement, “Rigorous academic standards, innovative and engaging faculty members, and a diverse classroom curriculum challenge students to reach their full intellectual potential. The College expects students to learn outside the classroom as well, through such activities as research, travel, and internships. The College facilitates those opportunities in the belief that a diversity of experiences is essential for genuine academic excellence. The College also expects and strongly supports faculty scholarship, research, and creative work that advances human knowledge and expression and informs excellent teaching… Connecticut College fosters civic responsibility and enhances academic excellence through a long tradition of community involvement and through courses that provide opportunities for service. The College promotes an understanding of local, regional, national, and international peoples, groups, cultures, and issues, and encourages students to take a life-long interest in them.”

Student Life

There are nearly 2000 undergraduate students enrolled in Connecticut College, most of whom live on campus within the wide variety of residence choices including themed housing. The college offers over 80 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the blue and white Camels field teams in 13 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Annual campus traditions include the Camelympics residence hall competition and Festivus (of Seinfeld fame). Connecticut College graduates are presented with Eastern White Pine saplings which they carry as they march at Commencement. Students learn the Core Values of the college: “The College promotes understanding by offering a variety of academic and social experiences and is committed to building greater access, opportunity, and equity… Students, faculty, staff, trustees, and alumni all participate in the governance of the College… The College supports and nurtures the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, creative, and physical development of its student body… Connecticut College maintains a strong commitment to its long-standing Honor Code.
