An hour west of Boston is the campus of Clark University, a private 4-year school located in Worcester, MA. Founded in 1887 with assistance from Jonas Gilman Clark, a local businessman, Clark University is one of the first research universities in the country; it wasn’t until 1902 that Clark started admitting undergraduate students. The 50 acre campus, located in the Main South neighborhood outside of downtown, features traditional collegiate Gothic architecture and a large park-like quad called University Park. Worcester, once a major manufacturing area, has transitioned to a service-based economy. The location in central Massachusetts is also rich in American history and in close proximity to Boston, Providence and other significant locales.
