Bellarmine University is a private, 4-year Catholic school located in Louisville, KY, in the Belknap neighborhood not far from the Ohio River and adjacent to Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve. The school was opened in 1950 as a college, established by Archbishop John A Floersh and named for the Cardinal Saint Robert Bellarmine. The college achieved university status in 2000. In 1968, the school merged with Ursuline College and became co-educational and independent from the Archdiocese. The 135 acre campus features Our Lady of the Woods Chapel (technically, there is no ‘Lady of the Woods’ in Catholic tradition – the statue is actually ‘Our Lady of Grace’), so named due to its setting. The majority of the campus features modern and contemporary architecture using a lot of red brick and glass. Notable alumni include “Mallard Fillmore” comic creator Bruce Tinsley.

Academic Programs

Bellarmine University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in over 50 programs. Fielding Rubel School of Business; Donna and Allan Lansing School of Nursing & Health Sciences; Annsley Frazier Thornton School of Education; School of Continuing and Professional Studies; School of Communication; and School of Environmental Studies. Noted for Nursing, Physical Therapy and Teacher Education, the largest program on campus is in the Healthcare field. Per the Mission Statement, “We educate our students through undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and professional studies, within which students develop the intellectual, moral, ethical and professional competencies for successful living, work, leadership and service to others. We achieve these goals in an educational environment committed to excellence, academic freedom, and authentic conversations that are not dominated by particular political or other narrow perspectives. Here we seek to foster a thoughtful, informed consideration of serious ideas, values and issues – time-honored and contemporary – across a broad range of compelling concerns that are regional, national and international.”
