Austin College is a private 4-year college located in Sherman, TX about 60 miles north of Dallas. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, the school was founded in 1849 in Huntsville, TX and named for historic Texan Stephen F Austin. The campus was moved to Sherman in the late 1870s. The 70 acre campus in the small town features a blend of college traditional and contemporary and modern architecture. The campus also features a main quad with fountains and many tree-lined pathways between buildings. Alumni of Austin College range from athletes to scholars to politicians to actors – cutting a wide swath across many fields.

Academic Programs

Austin College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees and Master’s Degrees in over 30 majors. The college is comprised of 18 academic departments and 3 academic centers. The largest programs on campus are in Business, Social Sciences and Biology/Biomedical fields; the school also requires a 3-week January term and 2/3 of all graduates have international study experience. Per the Mission statement, “Austin College continues its relationship with the church and its commitment to a heritage that values personal growth, justice, community, and service. The mission of Austin College is to educate students in the liberal arts and sciences in order to prepare them for rewarding careers and for full, engaged, and meaningful lives.” Austin College affirms the importance of: community that fosters lively intellectual and social interaction among diverse persons; a program that does not discriminate; faculty that acknowledges teaching, sustained by active commitment to professional growth and development, as its primary responsibility; a student body of committed learners, actively involved in the programs of the college and in service to the greater community and a climate of civility and respect.

Student Life

There are over 1200 undergraduate students enrolled in Austin College. All students are required to live on campus until their senior year; there are 4 primary residence halls as well as apartments and suites. There are many clubs and student organizations on campus including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the crimson, gold and black Kangaroos field teams in 9 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Among the traditions at Austin are “birthday dunking” in the fountain, Monte Carlo night, karaoke night (for new students) and “Kangapalooza” – a major concert event in the Spring. During their time at school, every undergraduate student has a dedicated faculty mentor. Graduates are well versed in the core values of the school: Personal Growth, Justice, Community, Service, Academic Excellence, Intellectual and Personal Integrity and Community Life. The sense of community is strong among graduates, as many stay in close contact in further education or career life. The Alumni organization encourages continued relationship with the school, which enhances Austin College’s impact on its students.
