Ashland University, located in Ashland, Ohio, is a private, comprehensive, Christian institution of the liberal arts and sciences. Established in 1878 as Ashland College, in 1989 the school achieved university status and formally changed its name to Ashland University in reflection of the school’s expansion and growth in both student enrollment and academic programs offered. Affiliated with The Brethren Church, Ashland University’s Judeo-Christian values form the foundation of both the educational and social environment of the University. Ashland University places a strong emphasis on the importance of providing a personalized education: “Accent on the Individual” has been the University’s motto for many years.

Academic Programs

Ashland University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since the 1930’s. The University’s mission is to provide a “transformative learning experience, shaping graduates who work, serve and lead with integrity in their local, national, and global communities.” Ashland University’s central values consist of placing accent on the individual; building spirituality and faith; encouraging character development; promoting academic freedom; and providing excellence in teaching.

Ashland University is made up of several colleges and schools, including The College of Arts & Sciences; the Richard E. & Sandra J. Dauch College of Business & Economics; the Dwight Schar College of Education; the Founders School for Continuing Education; the Dwight Schar College Nursing; The Graduate School; and the Ashland Theological Seminary, which offers Master of Art degrees, Master of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry plus graduate diplomas and certificate programs. At least 70 undergraduate majors and several graduate-level programs are offered through these schools, including a number of pro-professional programs. In addition, several Study Abroad opportunities are offered, including short-term faculty-led tours, pre-approved programs in over 38 countries, academic-year long programs, and many more.

Student Life

More than 5,000 students are currently enrolled at Ashland University, including nearly 4,000 undergraduates; the vast majority of students are Ohio residents. As a residential college, Ashland University offers several housing options including a number of first year residence halls and apartments reserved for senior students. Well over 100 student led clubs and organizations exist on Ashland University’s 135 acre campus, catering to a wide range of interests and passions. There is also a prominent Greek life presence on campus, with at least four fraternities and several sororities.

Ashland University’s athletic teams participate in the NCAA Division II and the school is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ashland University’s teams are nicknamed the Eagles, playing under the colors of purple and gold, with varsity sports including basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, track and field, men’s baseball, football, and wrestling and women’s softball, tennis, and volleyball.
