Aquinas College is a private, Catholic, liberal arts institution located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Established in 1886 the college was founded by the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids as an inclusive, educational community that would be rooted in the Catholic and Dominican heritage and tradition. The College is named in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas, thirteenth-century Dominican Scholar and teacher who is revered as one of most influential thinkers within the history of the Catholic Church and a one of the most brilliant minds of his time. Aquinas College’s goal is to foster a learning environment which is centered on the principles that were taught by St. Thomas Aquinas, particularly that of “having an open mind and open heart and continuously learning from our life experiences.”

Academic Programs

Aquinas College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1946. As a Catholic institution rooted in the Dominican tradition, the Aquinas College “provides a liberal arts education with a global perspective, emphasizes career preparation focused on leadership and service to others, and fosters a commitment to lifelong learning dedicated to the pursuit of truth and the common good.” Special emphasis is placed on the values of Faith, Learning, Service, and Community.

More than 60 undergraduate majors, are offered by Aquinas College, including a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and a Bachelor of Sciences as well as degrees in Music Education; Business Administration; International Business; Professional Accountancy; Nursing (offered from the University of Detroit Mercy in collaboration with both Aquinas College an St. Mary’s Mercy Medical Center); and the College’s signature program in Sustainable Business. A number of Master’s degrees are also available, including in the areas of Teaching; Education; Management; and Counseling. Aquinas College offers an abundance of service learning trips, study abroad program, as well as the Dominican College Campus Interchange Program, each of which allow students the opportunity to receive hands on learning in a new environment.

Student Life

Aquinas College has a total enrollment figure of nearly 2,000, the majority of which are undergraduates. On-campus housing is offered to students in one of nearly half a dozen residence halls, in university apartments, or in Living Learning Communities, which allow students of a particular major or interest to room together on a single hall floor or house. A number of student-led clubs and organizations exist, catering to a range of interests and allowing students and faculty ample opportunity to interact outside of the classrooms. An NAIA Division II school, Aquinas College’s varsity athletic teams primarily compete in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

Aquinas College is situated on a 107 wooded acre campus just a few minutes away from the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. The College’s grounds feature a blend of both twentieth-century and modern architecture as well as more than 100 species of trees and shrubs, winding woodland paths, creeks and ponds, which make for a delightfully peaceful environment. Meanwhile, Grand Rapids, Michigan’s second largest city with a population of over a million within the greater metropolitan area, offers students an abundance of cultural, recreational, and career opportunities and activities with its numerous festivals, concerts, cultural events and more.
