Alfred University, a private 4-year school, is located in Alfred, NY, west of the Finger Lakes and south of Rochester (not far from the Pennsylvania border). The expansive 232 campus has much green space and many trees and features a variety of architecture ranging from Gothic through modern to contemporary styles of buildings. Notable is the Davis Memorial Carillon, constructed in 1937 in honor of former president Boothe C. Davis. Founded in 1836, Alfred is notable for being co-ed and racially integrated from the start (unusual for the times). Alfred University has also partnered with Corning, Inc to focus on high tech ceramics – atypical for its narrow focus for technology. Among the notable alumni of Alfred University are actor/comedian Robert Klein and Robert H. Benmosche, CEO of AIG.

Academic Programs

Alfred University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 60 fields of study. Noted for Psychology, Art & Design and Teacher Education, the largest programs on campus are in Performing Arts, Engineering and Business. The University is comprised of four private colleges: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The College of Professional Studies, The Inamori School of Engineering, and The Graduate School. Also, The New York State College of Ceramics is cross-organized within Alfred University’s School of Engineering. “The mission of Alfred University is to provide excellent quality and enduring value through academic and co-curricular programming that is both intellectually challenging and practically relevant… [W]e prepare our students with the knowledge, skills and life-habits that will enable them to succeed, and to live lives of continuous personal growth and service to others. These outcomes are achieved through a commitment, by the entire AU community, to teaching and research, the pursuit of scientific and technical expertise, artistic creativity, and humanistic learning.”

Student Life

There are nearly 2000 undergraduate students enrolled in Alfred University, most living on campus in one of the traditional residence halls, single rooms, suites or apartments available. Alfred University sponsors dozens of clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the purple and gold Saxons field teams in 10 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Among the calendar traditions on campus is Hot Dog Day, first organized in 1972 to raise money for local charities and community-based civic organizations. While at Alfred, students learn the Core Values of the school: “A learning environment that promotes open exchange of ideas, critical thinking, global awareness, technological literacy, intellectual honesty, and community involvement; A work environment that promotes open communication, recognition of achievement, and the development of personal potential; Research and scholarship that advance the frontiers of knowledge, contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching, and demonstrate creativity in all fields of endeavor; Diversity in people and cultures, ideas and scholarship; A campus that is safe, attractive, and promotes health and wellness; A caring community that respects each individual, fosters intellectual curiosity and growth, promotes and models good citizenship, and encourages enlightened leadership.”
