Agnes Scott College, a private 4-year school is located in Decatur, GA, to the east of Atlanta. The school was founded in 1889 as Decatur Female Seminary by Presbyterian minister Frank H Gaines and is one of the “Seven Sisters of the South” including Brenau University, Hollins University, Mary Baldwin College, Salem College, Sweet Briar College and Wesleyan College. The compact 91 acre campus features a blend of traditional collegiate gothic and contemporary architecture and is listed on National Register of Historic Places. In 1890, the name was changed to Agnes Scott Institute to honor the mother of the college’s primary benefactor, Col. George Washington Scott. The name was changed again to Agnes Scott College in 1906. Notable alumnae includes country music band singer Jennifer Nettles and Poet Robert Frost was an annual visitor to the campus from 1945-1962 to read poetry.

Academic Programs

Agnes Scott College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees in over 30 majors. Agnes Scott College also offers dual degree programs in computer science, engineering and nursing with Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. The largest programs on campus are in Social Sciences and Biology/BioMedical fields. Per the Mission statement, Agnes Scott College “educates women to think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their times. Student Life

There are over 800 undergraduate students enrolled in Agnes Scott College; all non-commuter students are expected to live on campus in one of six residence halls or college-owned apartments located adjacent to the campus. There are over 50 clubs and students organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the purple and white Scotties field teams in 6 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. Among the school’s traditions are the class ring which is given to students during the spring of their sophomore year in a special ceremony. The ring is very distinctive and has remained essentially the same since the 1920s. Also, seniors at Agnes Scott traditionally ring the Agnes Scott Hall bell upon acceptance to graduate school or a job offer. Students who ring the bell sign their names on the walls of the tower.
