Adelphi University is a private, nonsectarian university, located in Garden City, New York. The oldest institution of higher education on Long Island, the school was established in 1863 as a private preparatory school known as Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn; in 1869 the academy was formally chartered by the Board of Trustees of the City of Brooklyn. Today, Adelphi University is made up of a small liberal arts college and a cluster of professional schools; aside from its main campus in Garden City, the University also operates centers in Manhattan, Hudson Valley, and Suffolk County. Adelphi University has received a number of awards and recognitions, including being named among the top ten percent among nationwide colleges by the US News Report.

Academic Programs

Adelphi University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1921. The University’s mission is to “provide quality undergraduate and graduate education and to offer professional preparation of the first rank in arts, education, business, clinical psychology, social work, nursing and other health sciences.” The University’s mission is to serve as the “leading private university in the region for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty who value excellence in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to one’s community.”

Adelphi University is made up of several colleges and schools, including: the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Nursing and Public Health; the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies; the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business; the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education; the School of Social Work; the University College; and the Honor’s College. Through these, Adelphi University awards a wide variety of degree programs, ranging from the undergraduate level to doctoral degrees.

Student Life

Adelphi University has an enrollment figure of more than 7,500, including over 5,000 undergraduate students. The University offers housing accommodations to approximately 1,300 students through more than half a dozen residence halls; each hall is supervised by a full-time, professional residence hall director who also supervises a staff of trained undergraduate and graduate resident assistants. More than 80 student organizations are recognized by Adelphi University, including both academic and social groups, and numerous programs are also offered through the University’s Center for Student Involvement, providing students with a variety of ways to interact and forge friendships with fellow students outside of the classroom.

Adelphi University’s varsity athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II and the school has been a member of the Northeast-10 Conference since 2009. The University’s location in Nassau County provides easy access both to and from New York City where students can enjoy all that the amazing city has to offer, from dining and shopping, to sports and recreation, to academic and career-related opportunities.
